Occupy Our Blog

November 2, 2011 — by

Contrary to recent news coverage, sometimes it’s good to be the 1%! Don’t worry, I’m not talking about anything controversial. What I’m referring to are the numerous stats about the different types of social media users. The most commonly referenced stat is the 90-9-1 rule. Researchers have uncovered that:

  • 90% of users are “lurkers” – people that go to social media sites, but never really participate
  • 9% of users are occasional contributors to conversations, and
  • 1% drive the bulk of social media content and conversations.

Today, we want to get the 99% of you who ‘never’ or ‘occasionally’ contribute to participate in our blog. The best part? We’ve made it really easy to help you take that first step.

If you come here regularly, you know that we at Root are very passionate about helping organizations be successful. We spend a lot of time talking about strategy execution and best practices for getting people engaged in helping organizations successfully deliver on their objectives. With participation and engagement in mind, we want you to tell us how you think your organization does in communicating its strategy to employees in our poll below.

Thanks for voting! It would be great if you shared some commentary on your rating. What is your organization doing well? If they’re not doing well, why do you feel that way? What would you like to see your company do more of to engage with employees? As a leader, are you struggling with getting your employees engaged? If so, why? We want to hear it all! And I’m really proud of you for taking that first step in occupying our blog!

I’m thrilled to participate in the Rootster community. The seemingly constant barrage of bad news prompted my new year’s resolution. I’m not going to sweat the irritants, instead I’m going to focus on things I can do to make a difference. In my organization, that means working with front line managers to raise our game. I’m implementing strategic workforce planning, talent development and manager as coach training in 2012.
